A Favorite Son’s Journey
On September 25, 2002, the Board of County Commissioners recognized Jason Mims for his “tireless work as a community volunteer and role model for tomorrow’s leaders” and conferred on him the Favorite Sons and Daughters of Hillsborough County award.
In the eight years since that day, Mims’ journey has allowed him to witness young people demonstrating academic excellence. A number of them were willing to do the hard work required to have a chance to access America’s exceptional secondary and postsecondary opportunities. Oftentimes, people hear Mims say that, “I am blessed and highly favored!” This response comes when others ask him, “How are you doing?”
God has granted Mims the opportunity to sit in fellowship with tomorrow’s leaders. He uses the time that they are willing to spend with him to listen to their dreams and perspectives on what America has in store for them. Their efforts fuel Mims’ passion for promoting Academic Excellence in urban ZIP Codes. He considers it a true blessing to move around his community knowing that by asking the Phillip Jackson Questions, he is likely to encounter Symbols of Hope and Opportunity for America’s future.
