Among the Rarest of Pictures
Jarred Carter, from Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, graduated from the University of Notre Dame as a member of the Class of 2010. On June 5, 2010, his parents and his faith community held a reception in his honor at Carrabas in his hometown.
I had the privilege of witnessing this celebration. Jarred and his mom, Avis, embraced near the end of the event. I recognized this as a rare event in the black community. A black male completed a four-year undergraduate program at my alma mater in four years after receiving preparation at a public high school in Florida.
