On August 7, Jason Mims travels to New York to begin a Simple AP Expedition. He is in search of reasons why the College Board does not provide students the option of taking an Advanced Placement African American Studies class while they are in high school. (more…)

At the current rate, my wife, April, and I are in the Race To The Top and leading the pack for the Black Community Presence at School Board Meetings Award for the 2010-2011 School Year. April attended the meeting on August 17, the week before school started. We both attended the August 31st meeting. It lasted over five hours and included three minutes when the subject was about black males demonstrating academic excellence. Both April and I plan to attend the September 7 meeting which will include the Final Public Hearing on the School Board budget for this school year. (more…)

I have a quote from Mother Teresa’s Business Card on my business card. “The fruit of LOVE is SERVICE. The fruit of SERVICE is PEACE.” Today is the 100th anniversary of her birth. Jay IV promotes higher academic achievement (even before age 1)!
http://www.publicschoolinsights.org/battle-books cites some studies indicating that my first honorary grandson, Jesse Givens IV, sitting in mom’s lap, is gaining an advantage over students who either did not get the memo—or who choose to spend their summer pursuing other activities. If one is to embrace the findings discussed, “a small investment in books for poor children might pay off.”
Exactly how many pictures of children and young people reading will we snap this summer?

A buddy said, “Jason start a blog!” This is it–after spending time trying to draw up the courage to follow this guidance.
As an optimist, my challenge is to look at the environment in which black students learn and share positive thoughts and entries–even when the data looks frightening!
